Failed to get a job at a bank in Singapore this summer? Try Grab

Did you fail to land an internship at a bank in Singapore this year? Are you worried that your work-free summer will scupper your chances of landing a job when you graduate? Are you jealous of your classmates who are spending the next 10 weeks pulling 14-hour days at the likes of Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan?

Help may be at hand.

While most banks closed their 2019 internship applications at the end of last year, Grab, Southeast Asia’s largest tech unicorn, is still hiring interns for Singapore-based 2019 jobs, according to its careers site. The catch? You’ll need to arrange a break from your degree and extend your graduate date by six months: most of the internships at Grab run from July to December.

The good news is that you don’t necessarily have to be doing a computer science degree to land one of these roles. Grab has internships in five business areas, but students planning a front-office or tech career in financial services will likely be most interested in thespecial projects’ internship at Grab Financial, the firm’s payments, lending and insurance arm.

Grab Financial doesn’t say precisely what special projects you’ll be working on, but you’ll need to “extract insights from data, trends, survey, and market intelligence” during the internship. The tech firm is constantly releasing financial products (earlier this year, for example, it announced a new digital insurance marketplace), so this internship could potentially give your resume a boost by giving you product-launch experience.

Grab Financial wants business, finance, IT, and engineering students to apply. A previous internship at a consulting, investment banking, or payment firm is a “plus”, according to its careers site.

The long length of the Grab internships means you won’t just be dipping in and out of a project in your team (as you typically would at an investment bank). The ‘people and organisational development’ internship tasks you with working on three medium-term projects, including one that is developing a learning and development strategy.

If you want to improve the lives of future interns at Grab, try working in ‘talent operations’. One of the projects in that department is focused on expanding the company’s internship programmes, and making them more “fun”.
