Standard Chartered design head leaves for Singapore startup

Standard Chartered is building up its digital assets unit in Singapore, but it’s also just lost a senior designer to a crypto firm.

Maik Lutze only joined SCB as its global head of design and user experience for corporate, commercial and institutional banking (CCIB) last December. Earlier this month, however, Lutze moved to EQONEX Group, a Singapore-headquartered digital assets financial services company, as head of customer experience and design.

He already appears in the mood to hire. Lutze’s design unit is working on “simplifying” crypto for professional traders and institutions, and he is looking to connect with people who might “fit” into the team, according to his LinkedIn profile.

EQONEX, which also has offices in Hong Kong, London and Vietnam, is currently recruiting for a senior UX researcher in Singapore.

Lutze’s hire demonstrates the increasing attractiveness of crypto jobs in Singapore since the Payment Services Act encouraged the growth of the sector last year.

Meanwhile, senior designers like Lutze are in high demand and short supply across the Singapore finance sector, which has generated round of musical-chairs hiring. Earlier this year, for example, DBS named Rainer Wessler as its chief design officer. His appointment followed the departure of previous design boss Chooake Wongwattanasilpa, who is now chief experience officer at Bank of Singapore.

Prior to Stan Chart, Lutze spent just under two years as Citi’s Singapore-based head of design for APAC and EMEA. He led a 30-strong design team that reinvented Citi’s “digital customer experience” across 17 markets.
