Balyasny Asset Management paid its average UK portfolio manager £1.5m last year. But do not be deceived

It's filing season for UK hedge funds and trading firms. The flurry of accounts filed for 2025 include a series for Balyasny Asset Management (BAM), the large multistrategy hedge fund run by the friendly figure of Dmitry Balyasny.

BAM files accounts for three UK entities: the partnership (Balyasny Asset Management LLP) and two support subsidiaries (Balyasny International Ltd and Balyasny International II Ltd).

Across each of these three entities, BAM employed 502 people last year. This was 62 people more than in 2024. How much you get paid at the hedge fund in London will depend upon which entity you work for.

Balyasny Asset Management LLP houses the portfolio managers and investment staff. Here, pay averaged £1.53m last year (up from £1.46m in 2024.

Balyasny International Ltd houses some undefined support staff. Here, pay averaged £334k last year (up from £291k in 2024).

Balyasny International II Ltd houses some more undefined support staff. Here, pay fell to £320k last year, (down from £329k in 2024).

325 people work in the support entities. The rest are portfolio managers and investment staff. Last year, Balyasny's UK entities hired 16 new portfolio managers and analysts and 46 new support staff

There is more to life in a hedge fund than wages and salaries. Balyasny Asset Management LLP) also generated £35m in profits to be distributed between members (partners), and one partner received nearly the whole lot. However, that partner was not a human but another entity, Balyasny International Asset Management Limited. This employs the same people as the partnership. Nearly the entire £35m was reinvested in this company, with around £9m disappearing for a likely tax charge.

Unusually, BAM advises people combing through its accounts not to be deceived by average pay figures. It says they are skewed by "portfolio managers with strong performance in the year." This applies to support staff too.
