Hedge fund Millennium hired the man who built Squarepoint's agricultural business
Millennium has got a new agricultural commodities pod in Switzerland. There, it may soon employ people who have been trading agricultural commodities at SquarePoint.
This is because Amit Sinha, the progenitor of Millennium's new Swiss pod, spent the past four years at SquarePoint, where he says he "built and led" the agricultural business, which he says he constructed from scratch. As such, Sinha says he also hired Squarepoint's "analysts and strategists" for the team.
Sinha hasn't commented for this article, but we take his word for it. Millennium declined to comment on what he's doing there. It's conceivable that Sinha will be inhibited from hiring his previous team by a non-solicitation agreement in his Squarepoint contract.
Commodities traders are hot right now. Sinha's career has spanned trading houses, rival hedge funds (Citadel) and agricultural supply chain companies. He specialises in grains and oil seeds. At Squarepoint, he ran both systematic strategies and made discretionary trades.
Millennium already has various pods trading agricultural commodities. Jonathan Kroft joined from Citadel in 2023 and says he's now a senior portfolio manager there (on LinkedIn). Davy Malca joined from Cargill in 2024 and is also based in Switzerland. Todd Thul joined from Cargill in 2022. There are more.
