Top London hedge fund added 33 people, despite hiring slowdown

When we spoke to senior insiders at London hedge fund Taula Capital in November last year, we were told that 2025 was going to be about performance, not hiring. In fact, it seems to have been about both.

Halfway through 2025, headcount at Taula Capital is understood to be 110 people, up from 77 at the end of 2024. Employees at the fund are equally split between investment staff and support staff, and are based in New York, Dubai, Milan and Geneva. More portfolio manager hires are understood to be in the pipeline, pending the end of non-compete periods.

Unlike big multistrategy hedge funds, Taula operates a single strategy: discretionary global macro. It has $7bn in assets invested across the strategy. Returns haven't been publicly disclosed but Taula appears to have no shortage of money to invest in talented people: Mehdi Belhachmi a French volatility trader at Morgan Stanley eschewed Goldman Sachs and two other hedge funds to join Taula (once his gardening leave ends) in August. Ex-Goldman Sachs MD Jacob Gordon, committed to joining in April.

Founded by Diego Media, a personable former Citadel and Millennium portfolio manager, Taula started life last June with investment staff predominantly drawn from Millennium, including deputy CIO Stefan Ericsson, allegedly bought by Millennium for $50m. As well as Goldman, more recent hires have come from the likes of Brevan Howard.

At least half the new hires are in support roles. As Taula has expanded oversees, it's needed to build out support staff in local offices. It's also been recruiting for an AI team in New York under Adithya Naryana, who joined from Point72 in February.

There are suggestions that Taula Capital is leanly and efficiently staffed compared to Jain Global, last year's other major hedge fund launch. Jain Global manages $5.5bn in AUM but employs 350 people globally: more than three times as many as Taula.

There are suggestions that this is because Jain is multistrategy fund with greater potential to leaverage its AUM. However, some Taula insiders dispute this. Either way, when Taula makes money it has fewer people to share it between - even after this year's hiring.
