Ramp, the Revolut of New York, is hiring in London

New York's hottest fintech is coming to London. Ramp, a cards and expense management fintech valued at $40bn earlier this year, is planning to open an office in the city "later this summer" according to Jacob Wallenberg, Ramp's VP of international expansion. It has a propensity to pay big salaries (upwards of $400k in New York), and has a hiring strategy that bears a lot of similarities to London's current largest fintech, Revolut.

Ramp is hiring for just two jobs in London at present. Wallenberg said that Ramp "care[s] less about the individual credential[s]" when hiring and instead focuses on hiring people who can learn new things quickly. Revolut CEO Nik Storonsky said in a hiring playbook released last year that "slow career progression" and "working in a slow-paced environment" are red flags when hiring.

Wallenberg said it's also important to "convey the story of how you're evolving over time" during your job interview, and to show examples of your creativity. While he said this is "easier than ever to do... fewer people take the initiative to put themselves out in the world."

Ramp also has an aversion to "tried and true expert" corporate types. Storonsky, similarly, lamented hiring "experienced executives" early into his time at Revolut. Instead, Ramp likes to promote young and promote from within; Wallenberg said this model is "such an effective incentive for people to do well." A junior role in Ramp's London office, therefore, could become lucrative very quickly.

Some of the potential negatives of working at Ramp are the same as those at Revolut, not least the intensity of the work. Ramp staff in the US that we spoke to last year said the culture is "all about results," and described it as "a bit of a meat grinder." They also said that "people who make their whole life about Ramp love it." Revolut's top performers have a similar mindset.

Ramp, moreso than Revolut, has a reputation for paying a lot of money. Among its open listings in New York, two roles in its design team pay up to $440k in base salary alone, while sales staff can also receive upwards of $400k in total compensation. The London office isn't quite as lucrative as yet; one of the two open roles is a customer success associate that pays up to £43k ($57.9k) per year on an hourly basis.
