Who are JPMorgan's 135 new managing directors and what do they do?
What does it take to become a managing director in an investment bank. If you asked each of the 135 people promoted to MD at JPMorgan this week, you’d likely hear a lot of different answers.

Sometimes it helps to work in a trendy area like AI. San Francisco-based Anand Agarwal, the first name on the list, works in semiconductor investment banking. Another AI banker who made the cut was New York-based Kevin Curtin, who works in AI infrastructure investment banking. He’s also a former drummer in a Blink 182 cover band; it’s not clear whether that had any bearing on his career but you can assume he’d pay attention to all the small things necessary to thrive as a banker.
It also helps to work in a business area that your bank is pushing into. Khalid Fayez is the CEO of JPMorgan Saudi Arabia, where the bank secured a regional headquarters license in October. Javier Martinez is the Americas co-head for JPMorgan’s private capital solutions group; JPMorgan was reportedly building out the team at the start of the year to compete with the PCA teams growing at the likes of Evercore and Jefferies.
Having the right attitude and hustle would likely be one of the most common answers you’d receive. We previously wrote about Hong Kong-based TMT banker Sherril Lu when she was an analyst at JPMorgan 11 years ago; she was part of a group of ‘internship addicts’ in China who would ensure they had at least four internships before securing a full-time analyst position.
